The authority for renewing the San Francisco mail service for a period of three years was carried ia the House 0! Bepresentativea last night by a Urge majority. If a longer terra had been proposed by the Government it woold hare received the sacctioa of the House, bat the ameiidmeats cf the Auckland members to extend the time were not supported by weight enough to secure their ratification. It is satisfactory to see that the merits of the service were appreciated by a large proportion of the members, all Macacdrew, true to his paat traditions, was the only member who apoke of allowing the service to drop. The fact that the line actually co-at the colony little more than £5000 in exeeaa of postages la3t year «aa a powerful argument ii it 3 favour. Mr Macandrew could see his way to voting £40,000, or even double that sum, for a direct steam service, thongh co receipts in reduction are likely to accrue to the Colonial Treasnry, and the commercial advantages of the service will not be very much greater than the colony reaps from the American connsc;ion. In the aiagle item ol canned salmon alone New Zealand consnmers have been, saved zaacy thoaaaods of pounda by the Pacific Mail Service, and to other branches of American trade the direct postal terrice has giTen an enormous stlmnln'. Upon divislonlaat night the subsidy for direct steam serrice with England was reduced by half. Already the Uovernment have an offer for a service with 3,300 ton steamers, for £30,000 a-j ear, and there is certainly no reason why an excessive vote should betaken. In all probability agood service will be obtained for that sum. Sir Dillon Bell's estimate for a mercantile fifty-day service wa3 only £10,000 a year. So far as this colony U concerned, the San * Francisco mail is settled for a longer term, but the co-opera-tion of New South Wale 3ha 3 still to be secured. There ia every reason to believe, however, that it will not be withheld, the service having now the snpport of the mercantile communitr cf onr slater colony by its regularity and commercial importance.
