There waa a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen at the monthly meeting of the Auckland Icstitu'e last evening. Mr E A. Mackechnie presided. Tne followiag li3t of new members wta reid : Measra j. Mr Gulliver (\nck!aad) A lin of donations to the Museum was anniunced as follows : Collection cf bocei of extinct saorians and fishe-1, in exchange, from Profeasor Snow, Kansas. U.S.^. ; specimens of Ceratodus Fo?teri, ia exefiange, from Professor H. A. W.rd, Rochester, U.S.A.; fossil shell* from the Wanpanai tertiaries, G 11. Drew; yew Zealand sheila, Mr Jujtice Gil'ies; German weather reports, K. B. Dlek«m. A piper by t aptaia T. Broun, on " L'eacnptioa of New Gen«ra and Species of Curculionida;," wu then read. It described three new genera and forty-two new species of " waevils," or carcalisnidx, ote of tbe largest of the families ot coleoptera. Of these, thirty-two had ceen collected in Otago, one in Canterbory, two in Wellington, and the remaining seven in Auckland. The total number of weevils known to exist in NewZeilsni now amouated to 204, on!y 20 of which were known to science prior to 1575. A paper on "The University of New Zea'and—lts History, its Constitution, and its ObjVc's," was read by Bishop Cowie, while Mr Justice Gillies read a short bat intereitiag paper on "The Growth of the Cork Tree," which will be found in our local columns this evening. The meeting teen terminated.
