It has too long been the habit of publio bodies of shutting their eies and sense ot smelling to any nuisance that Is represented by an influential directory, snd a largo number of shareholders. A poor ma. who keens a dirty yard is fined £5, and sent to prison if he do not pay, and quite rlghtit should be so; but a poisonous manufactory, that will make the neighbourhood unbearable night and day, and far more injurious to the publio health than a dirty yard, oan carry on It 3 nuisance with impunity. Oil works, gas works, and soap manufactories have no business in the centre of a large population. The expenditure of thousands of noun's for ornamental parks and sewerage, for the pnblio health, is thrown away, bo lpng as suoh nuisances ore allowed to counteract thißm. If the Board of Heath had done its duty, thoy would have been removed to suitable localities ye.r. ai?o. although' it Is satisfactory to And thai the majority of the Council have decided not To increase the evil,—l am, &o„ CO-tBIS-BNC.
