COROMANDEL, today. This event came off at Mercury Bay on Tuesday, December 27th. The competitor* |! were Albert White, of Mercury Bay, and farter and Floyd, from Australia. The distance was 3!j miles. At the .start White led off, and his friends were momentarily in- ■ duced to think he was going to win, and cheered. Carter, however, quickly over* ■$ hauled the local favourite, and won as be pleased, coming in several lengths in ad- Pj vance. Witch 1 I'll Try ... 2 Polonaise ... ... 3 This event was interesting, The Witch and' I'll Try had a close contest, and it was difficult to pronounce on the winner till the close of the race. SKIFF BACK. George White ... ... ... if William White 2 Two others'(Butcher and Baker) started, but caved in, At this stage of the proceedings torrents of rain fell and stopped all the events. The large number of spectators rushed for shelter to every available tenement, and the hotel was thronged, The ball in the evening was a great success. There was an excellent attendance, and all present thoroughly enjoyed thotnselves. The cricket match which was to have been played between the respective dabs of Coromandel and Mercury Bay had to be abandoned. Owing to the flood of rain which fell, it was absolutely impossible to attempt outdoor sports after 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Visitors to Mercury Bay who had to return to Coromandel were impressed with the necessity that exists for a proper road being constructed, by Government,
