"THE BOHEMIAN GIRL."
Balfe's romantic and pleasing little opera, "The Bohemian Girl," with its familiar music and pretty airs, was successfully given on Monday evening. The Theatre -was crowded, and the audience received every vocal selection in the composition with enthusiastic ajnlause. Miss Montague appeared as Arlieft, Mr Charles 'Earner as Thaddeus, Mr Farley as Devilshoof, Mr Gordon as Count Arnheim, Miss Josephine Deakin as the Gipsy Quien, and Mr Skinner as Florestein. The prima donna sang superbly the favourite ballad, "I Dreamt that I Dwelt in Marble Halls " as well as tho interpolated song " It was a Dream," and for each she had to respond to an imperative encore. Mr Charles Turner had also to submit to the popular will by repeating in its entirety the fine declamatory selection " When the Fair Land ot Poland," which ho gave with thrilling effect, while Mr Gordon for his rendering of "The Heart Bow'd Down" received a similar acknowledgment of satisfaction and pleasure. " When Other Lips" was also effectively sung by Mr Turner. Miss Deakin was a little overweighted in the part of the Queen, bat she sustained it very well indeed, and in doing so, shewed much capacity for operatic impersonation. Mr Skinner made an indifferent Florestein. The choruses were capitally executed, and the orchestra contributed its full quote to the general success. There could be bo doabt as to tho approbation of the audience, for there was neither stint nor ambiguity about the measure in or mode by which it was expressed. The opera was repeated last night te another bumpor " houso " by which it was received with no less favour and prononnced gratification. "The Rose of Castile" is announced for to-night,and as it has not been played here for many years paat it should prove a sure "draw."
