The annual cricket matcb, Wellington v. Nelson, commenced on Monday. It was beautiful weather. Wellington's first innings closed for 62, and Nelson for 105. Wellington's second innings ended for 54. Nelson won the mutch by one run, and nine wickets.

To-day is almost universally observed as a holiday. In Christcburch yesterday, over 12,000 persons travelled on varioua linen of tramway.

Richard Hcstler, aged 70, formerly haodicapper to tho Cautcrbury Jockoy Club, was found dead in the diuing-rooai of llartou's House, at 11 yesterday morning. Deceased took two cups of en flee nt half-past eight, and was not soen again till found dead. Tho cause is not known.

The annual exhibition of the Canterbury Society of Ait opened on Saturday, at the Boys' High School. A large number of painting*, principally water colours, wore exhibited, and shewed an improvement on previous exhibition*

The Williamions opened in " (Struck Oil" to an immense house, the Princess Theatre being crowded to the doers, aud money refused at all parts. The Zulu War Diorama also had an immense audience.

Over 5,000 persons travelled on the Palmeraton • Clinton sections yesterday, including 250 excursionists to tho Lakes. All sports apd steamer excursions yesterday were well patronised. The weather wss glorious. To-day is observed as a holiday. It is ruining.
