PARLIAMENT FURTHER PROROGUED. Parliament has been further prorogued until Monday, the 13th February. CURISTCHURCH, this day. PROVINCIAL ANNIVERSARY.
Yesterday being the anniversary of the province was observed as a close holiday in the Government office?, all except tbe Post and Telegraph beiog c!o>ed. A special service was held in the Cathedral, and the athletic sports in Haglcy Park were most numerously attended. Upwards of two thousand Sunday-school children held a picnic at Papanui. At night there was a grand display of fireworks in Hagley Patk, followed by a torchlight procession of the Fire Brigade. A Volunteer review will take place at Lyttelton. MAYORAL BANQUET.
\ . The newly-elected Mayor of Christchurch gives a grand banquet to celebrate his installation. Upwards of 150 invitations have been issued. Hia Excellency the Governor will be present. The Wilhelmj concert last night was a great success. ■ DROWNING FROM THE PENGUIN. During the return of tbe excursion steamer Penguin from Akaroa,a seaman named Wm. Gunn iell overboard. A life buoy was thrown and fell within two feet of him, but be neglected to seize it, and made for the shore. A boat was lowered, but failed to reach him in time. Gunn was drowned. He was a young mau, and joined the. steamer in Lhmediu on Sept. '2Sth latt. ' 1 AKAROA YACHT RACE. . I A. yacht Tacc at Ak&toa lVeg&tta josVetday open to all comers, Erst prize £30, i second £5, resulted:— Dove, H. Hutehin-' son, 2; ifari/la, Captain Butt, 2;, I Chance, MessTs Black and Blown, 3. Won easily. The double sculling and pair- ( , oar race were won by tbe Lyttelton Rowing C7ub. The cauoe race was won by tbe i I Canterbury (Crmstchurcb) Rowing Club. The Begatta was very successful. There was a large attendance, including abont 400 excursionists from Lyttelton.
