REPRESENTATION.
A table bas been prepared by Government officers showing for each electoral district;, and each provincial district in tbe colony the population, number ot representatives in proportion thereof, total representation, representatives in proportion to total representation to which each district would be entitled on the basis ofpopn. lation on tbe assumption of a total representation of ninety members, and the excess of deficiency of share as at present represented. It appears that on the basis above mentioned Auckland would be entitled, taking the total population at 486,364, and eighteen decimal thirteen members, the present number being 18. Taranaki also very nearly holds her own, 2 decimal 74 being her just share, three members beiDg now returned for that province. Wellington rei quires 11 decimal 29 in place of her present 10. Ha wkes Bay remains the same, _: decimal 117 falling to her share. Marlborough, | which at present has three members, in , future will have to put up with two—l
decimal 96 being her proportion. Nelson will lose certainly three members, perhaps four. The present representations being seven—her future 3 decimals 74. Westland loses a member—perhaps two, the proportion jbeing five present to three decimal 71 future. The great districts, Canterbury and Otago, will (tain respectively six and three members. The constituency which has least members is Collingwood, where 1645 individuals roturn a_ member, Mr Gibbs, The next pocket borough in order is Totara, Mr Gisborne's constituency, whilst the largest constituency is represented by Mr Wright, a momber of the late Railway Commission.
