SAILING RACE.
The sailing race between the boats Madge, Hattie May, Observer and Imp, for £5 a-side, took place in the Harbour this afternoon. The course lay from the wharf, round the Daphne, over to the North Shore buoy, back round the Daphne, thence up round the red buoy to westward of the wharf, and round the course again. The positions were : No. 1 (uext wharf), Imp ; 2, Observer; 3, Madge; 4, Uattie May. The Madge wassailed by J. Bigelow, jun.; the Hattie May, by J. White; Obs< rver, by Dau Hollaud; and Imp, by Ted Moore. Captain McKonzie officiated aa starter, and at 1.10 a.m. dropped the flag, All got quickly underway, with the exception of the Observer,which, by some means,got her anchor foul, thereby losing about 20sccs. They steered for the opposite chore, the Imp being ahead and to windward, Madge next, Observer taking third place, but a long way aatern, with the Hatte May last. This position was kept until rounding the Daphne's buoy, when the positions were as follows :— Madge 1, Imp 2, Observer 3, Hattie May 4, The Madge was considerably ahead rounding tho North Shore buoy, the remainiug boats keeping pretty close together. 2 30. p.m. Bounding the bnoy off the wharf the Madge was about a mile ahead. The Hattie May anp Imp went round together, the latter having rather the adYantage. The Observer carried away her bowsprit before reaching the buoy, and had to effect temporary repairf which lost her about 20 minutes. She was considered out of the race. 2 40. p.m. The Madge continued to increase her lead on the run down the Imp taking second piece with the Hattie May third. 2,45. p.m. The North Shore buoy was rounded in the same order. Tho Imp is ahead of the May, and well to windward. The race finished :— Madge ... 3hrs 3mins 12aecs 1 Imp 3hrs lOmins — 2 Hattie May ... 3hrs 14mins COsecs 3 The Observer did not finish.
