ASHBURTON, this day.

A man named Stalker dropped dead at a sale yesterday afternoon, Supposed cause ot death appoplexy.

DUNEDIN, thisday.

A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held, to take into consideration a letter by Mackerras, on tho subject of direct steam communication with Great Britain. Mr Mackerras brought under the Chamber's notice tho advisability of asking the Union S.S. Company to take slops for the introduction of such a class of boats as would meet the requirements of the times. A considerable amount of information was collected, chiefly bearing on the information of soft goods linns, .and their desire to avail themselves of such a line was shown on the majority of imports and saving of interest would fully compensate for highftr rates, and the freight of tonnage by steamers. A sub-committee was appointed to wait on the directors of the Union Company to ascertain how far they deemed it practicable to establish a line.
