Success G. M. Co.—There is every promise of more gold being got similar to that sent to town. There is a good show still in the face and the reef is making solid. Stone with a little gold is seen. It is expected to break down tomorrow.

GKAHAMSTOWN, this day.

The Alburnia have cut a lode known as the Success or Star of the South, showing good indications near the Whau ground. The Whau have also met promising indications in the new lode, and start crushing this week. Sir Gerge Grey is expected at (ho Thames on Saturday night, to address the electors and proceed to Coromaudel, for the Bamo purpose ou Mouday night.

JBLKNHEIM, Wednesday. MR REDWOOD'S THOROUGHBRED SALE. At the sale of Mr Redwood's stud, the following animals were disposed of :— Chestnut stallion Anterone, 425 guineas, to the Auckland Stud Company; Frailty, two years, by Daniel O'Kourke—Constance, , was purchased by Mr Westraeath for 151 guinea". Wainui filly, 164 guineas. The bay mare Purke, by Towton—Toi Toi, with foal at foot, fell to Mr Clifford, at 160 guineas. The Kororoi colt was bought by Mr Bates, for 105 guineas. Numerous other bids were made for the other horses on the catalogue, but not reaching the reserve prices, they were passed in. Mares and foals looked grand, aud the yearlings were perfection. The display of these last, and the two-year-olds, was as fine as anything of the kind that could be seen in the colony.

WELLINGTON, Wednesday. KUMOUKED SOCIETY FRAUD.

Edward Garton, Secretary of the Welling, ton South Pacific Loan Society, is believed to have absconded. It appears that the society is an association of working men who club together to invest their savings, each paying a certain, sum weekly, and the money is invested at the market rate of interest. The accounts were duly submitted about a fortnight ago, when a serious deficiency, amounting to between £200 and £300, was found to exist. Garton was commuuicated with, and asked for an explanation. He replied that he would put things ris*ht on his return, which was to have been Monday last. However, he did not return, and a rumour has gained currency that ho decamped by the steamer Norfolk to Sydney ou Thursday last. The police are investigating the matter, NEW HEADMASTER OF WELLINGTON COLLEGE. . The Wellington College Governors to-day unanimously appointed Mr Joseph Mackay, M.A., of Aberdeen, now and for twelve years resident and mathematical master of Nelson College, to be principal of Wellington College. THE FEN Gu IN INQUIRY. Au inquiry into the recent mishap to the steamer Penguin was commenced this morning. The evidence adduced shows that the accident was due to the chief ollicer mistaking Boot Cove for Dreffenbacb Point. It is still proceeding.

CIIRISTCHUIiCH, Wednesday, THE MURDER CASE.

At the Supreme Court this morning Walter Pringle Gibson was indicted for the murder of William Kerrison, on December 20tU last. Prisoner was defended by Mr Holmes, and pleaded not guilty. Late at night Gibson was acquitted of the murder of Kerrison on the grounds of insanity. Dr. Hacon, Medical Superintendent of the Sunnyside Asylum, and Dr. Sigmes, both gave testimony to the effect that he wag not in his right Bouses, and another witness recapitulated the acts of the man, which bad long led him to believe him to be not in nis right mind. The Crown Prosecutor said in theface of the medical evidence he would not go on with the case, and the jury at once returned a verdict of acquittal. Gibnoa will be confined in the Addington Gaol till the pleasure of the Colonial Secretary.

DUNEDIN, thia day. "PINAFORE" PEKFORMANCB.

The Dunedin School Committee declined to countenance the attendance of school children at the "Pinafore performance, for which free admissioD was offered to cer« tilicated teachers.

Major Saith, accompanied by members of the Education Board, visited the City, High, and Training schools, and expressed astonishment at the high average attendance, considering the number on the roll. He particularly admired the conduct of the boys of the nigh School. In the after* noon he inspected tne harbour works. The Honjeward Bound Company, at Macetown, crushed 235 ounces from 334 tons of stone.
