THE HIKURANGI MEETING.
TnK great native ineetiDg at Hikurangi will commence on the 16th inst. Large stores of food have been gathered for the occassion, and feasting on an extensive scale may be expected. We hear on reliable authority that Tawhiao is exceedingly friendly towards Europeans, and will place no restrictions in the way ot visitors. Our informant also considers that the forthcoming meeting will afford an excellent opportunity to the Governmentfor obtaining concessions in respect to the opening of the couutry, the Maori King never having shewn such an amiable disposition to-wards Europeans as on this occasion. There is a rumour also that he would be glad to release himself from the malign influence of the Alsatians who have so long surrounded him, and obstructed the opening of the country, lest it should bring their necks nearer"to halters, and that he would gladly lease certain portions of territory. We l^ive this rumour for what it is worth.— " Waikato Mail."
