SALE OF ANCHOR STEAMEKS,
The Auchor line of steamers, with the exception of the Lyttclton, together with the Albion wharf, fouudry, hulk, etc., have now been purchased here. Tho price has not transpired, but the new owuers are Messrs Cook and Co., P. Donald, Arthur and Cook, and Crown, Superintendent Engineer. The steamers will continue as heretofore in the Wellingtou, Wanganui, and West Coast trade.
FATAL GUN ACCIDENT. WELLINGTON, this day. An inquest was held this morning on the body of the lad Craig, shot ou Saturday. A verdict of accidental death was returned. Dr. Lemon has received a cable message to the effect that the Sorata is being towed to Adelaide.
CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday.
At the settliug over the races the stakes paid were : Stead, £1521; Horseford, £43G; Lance, £304; Butler, £95 ; Matthews, £95 ; Mason, £S7 ; Wcstmaeott, £47 ; Goodman, £40; George, £15 ; Fuller, £10 ; Franks, £10. Total, £2,663.
CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
£100 MATCH. A match for £100 a-side came off at tho race-course on Saturday between Lone Hand, 9st, and Levant, Sat; three miles on the flat, lone Hand won with the greatest ease.
INVERCARGILL, this day. Only two parties are getting gold at Steward's Island, and the ground is limited. At an inquest in North Invercargill en the body of a child of 13 months, the verdict wasthat death was occasioned by debility arising from the state of the lungs and brains in compuuetion with bad diet.
