BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinasy meeting of the Board of Education was held in the offices, Wynd-ham-street. Present: Messrs J. M. Clark (Chairman), May, Dargaville, Prime, Luke, Moat, and the Inspector of Schools.

Minutbs.—The minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted. Sil Julius Vogel's Prize Books.—A letter was rend froru Mr Hislop, addressed to the Board informing its members that he had received a communication from Sir Julius Vogel, stating that a number of books for prizes had been forwarded by Sir Julius, by the Durham, to be disposud of in such a way as the Board might think fit, as Christmas present?, the books being the works ot Tennyson, Macauley, and other modern authors.—The Board considered that the' books might he presented as extra prizes to the pupils in the High School.—lt was resolved that Mr Hcslop's letter be acknowledged by the Secretary, conveying the thanks of the Board to Sir Julius Vogel.

Otahuhu.—A protest was received from two members of the Otahuhu School Committee, protesting against the nomination of Mr John Fairburn as a member of the Board of Education.—lt was determined to take no further action in the matter.

Won-delivery of Letters.—Several complaints were received from local districts to the effect that residents had not received voting papers, one being from Lucas Creek. —A letter was read from the post-master iv explanation which canned the delay. Bombay.—An application was received from this district in respect to a new building, but as Mr Allwright's report had not arrived, the matter was postponed until the next meeting, also several similar matters.

Lake.—An application from Mr Holland, of the Lake, for an extra grant of £7 towards the school building was received, which the Board could not entertain.

Mauku.—Application from settlers for the use of the school was deferred until a reply should be received, with statement of funds, from the School Committee.

In commenting on the case ot Michael McCarthy, acquitted at New Plymouth yesterday on a. charge of perjury, Judge Richmond remarked that from the number of challenges iv the empanelling of the jury, it was almost impossible in small places to get an impartial jury. Ho was apprehensive it would be necessary to have a modification of the jury, laws, or justice would be seriously endangered. The remedy, lie said, was when a charge was brought against an old settler in a small district, the case should not be tried in that district.
