THE SIGNBOARD AGITATION,
CAMBRIDGE, this day. The crusade against Mr Wells' signboard, erected on the open space adjoining the Public Hall did not cause its downfall yesterday, though at four o'clock the eyes of Cambridge were all turned towards it, such being the hour tbe Hall Committee had unanimously fixed for it to come down, Mr Hosking representing. Mr WelU declared he would fight to the last in defence of the signboard. Sergeant Brennan took up his position near the ominous standard of Mr Wells, and as a number of Armed Constabalary marched round in the vicinity, the carpenter engaged to knock dowu the offendiug structure was afraid to do it without written authority from the trustees. Mr Hewitt kindly offered to lend Mr Williams his pole, and Mr Camp, another committeeman, was offered another implement of destruction to knock it down with, but at sunset it still stood proudly up in all the glory of big letters and new paint.
AJCouxcil of War.
Last night the committee met. Present: Messrs Williams, Brooks, Houghton, Camp, Fisher, Thompson, and Captain Runciman. A letter was received from Mr Morris, through Whitaker aud Shceban, requesting tho Committee to delay operations till Mr Wells was at home, aud threatening to give anyone in charge of the police who dared to touch the signboard.
Ultimatum of tub Powers.
The Committee elected JMc^rs Williams, Thompson, and (Captain Rnnciman as a deputation to wait on Mr Wells on the arrival of the coach, and give him till 7 o'clock this morning to pull it down.
Captain Capel arrived last ni^ht from Alexandra with about a score of Armed Constabulary.

Wells is defiant. On the arrival of Mr Wells, ho was waited on by Captain Runciman and Mr Williams, chairman of tho trustees, but Wells snapped his fingers at them and defied them to touch his signboard. At seven o'clock Sergeant Brennan was on the ground, but nothing hostile occurred. At ten o'clock the two delegates and Wells met at the solicitors, and are now negotiating. A 'public meeting will be convened unless the trustees eject the signboard.
