On our fourth page, to-day, appears a tolegraphic account of the Ore at Ronwiektowu, Marlborough, with loss of life. Tho report was crowded out of our Saturday's issue. There aro also two lutcers on tho Oiaugc gathering, which have been in typo some days, and letter ou piizo-litiug. Messrs Eraser and White, public accountants, report the STAR issue last week as 37,02G against 3b',709 for tho previous week. Seldom have wo seou a moro touching sccuo thau was observablo at tho Theatre on Saturday ovcuing, when a youthful Adonis, divesting himself accidentally of both overcoat and jacket, was discovered by the delighted audience (who seemed to think it a capital joke and laughed " consumedly") sitting in his shirt sleeves, n picture of modest confusion and blushing bashfulness. To the Editor : Sir, —In your account of the examination of the man " Wilson," for the robbery of a silver watch, which appeared iv your issue of Friday night, you state that the theft was committed iv Powell's Blue Post. Mrs Bennett scuds us a letter contradicting in overy particular the statement by Mr Harrison, read at the. meeting of tho City School Committee, with reterenco to the charges preferred by her against teachers of City West School. The letter would uccessatily call for long replies, and give rise to a protracted and acrimonious personal correspondence, which, with the present pressure on our columns, we could hardly find space for. Moreover, as the matter is now being investigated by the committee, it would be improper to commence a newspaper discussion upon it. The last suggestion in our correspondent's letter with reference to this inquiry appears reasonable, aud would obviate the necessity for newspaper warfare. "I cannot," sho writes, "see of what use the investigation is in the way it is conducted. Why not appoint a day and hour aud let Mr Harrison meet me face to face, and let the committee have my statements and his denial, and see whether my statements are correct or not. I venture to say that if inquiry is made at the pupils and also at myself and my children, iv a proper manner, they will find every word I have stated correct. I would wish the gentlemen to bear in mind that, being hard ot heariug, I am careful always to state what I distinctly hear."

The worshippers iv the small chapel in Lome-street, used by the Wesleyans, havo been sadly incerrupted in their service on Sunday evenings by boys, who throw stones against the chapel and make hideous noises. We call attention to the concert this evening in favour fof Mr Salter, late libriariau to the Young Men's Christian Association, which in point of musical aud vocal talout will be worthy of general patronage, apart from the chief object of recognising the services of Mr Salter. The words of Mr Gordon Gooch's solo "The Song of the Labourer,'" by a Waikato lady, are printed on iho back of the programme. Mr Salter, the ex-librariau will have a few remarks to make in connection with the Young Men's Christian Association.

We have iuspected a splendid glass case, made to order of Mr Michelson, of Dargaville, by Mr H. Jones, cabinetmaker, of Shortland-street. The case is formed of kauri from Tairoa, is Gft Gin x 3ft Oin, and is beautifully polished, and decorated with curiously wrought fret work by the saw. The back opens by hinges, with lookingglass, reflecting the specimens of gum to be exhibited at the Melbourne Exhibition. Altogether, it is a unique piece of art-work creditable to Mr Jones.

Hotum of sick treated at tho Provincial District Hospital for the week ending Saturday, July 17th, 1880 :—Remained last return, 99 ; admitted since, 13 ; discharged, 9 ; died, 1 ; remaining, 102—males, 85 ; females, 17. Arrangemcut of cases : Zymotic, 1C ; constitutional, 14; local, 45: developmental, 18 ; violent, 9. One death occurred, viz., AY., aged 18years, female, on the 15th instant, of phthisis pulmonalis. Thanks uro returned to Mrs Isaacs lor illustrated papers. At a special sitting of tho District Court, held by arrungoment on Saturday, His Honor, Judge Macdonald, gave judgment in tho case of the Golden Crown G.M. Co, v.1 the Thames County Council. Mr A. E. Whitakcr appeared for tho plaintill's and Mr J. M. Alexander for tho defendants. Tho defendants havo n mortgago over the mine by virtuo of certain advances made by tho Suporintonilaut of tho Province for OJoldlield Works, and tbe legal question which was disputed is whether tho gold obtained from tho mi no was to bo regarded as rent or whether it was material that it might he taken away from tho land, in tho circumstances of the case—whether, in lino, it could bo stopped by tho laudlord, or whether it was tho property of tho tribute... and tho mino-owncr.i. The amount of tho claim was £92 10s lOd. His Honor, after viewing tho caf;o, said : Tho circumstances thus sot out may bo reduced to these : Plaintiffs, alter mortgaging an opeu mine, let it without assent by or fraud in tho mortgagee, one term of such lotting being that tbo tenants' pay, by way of rout, a proportionate part of tho gold won. Whilo some gold, so won, after default by the mortgagor, is in tho hands of the tenants the mortgagees stop in and claim the gold, afterwards ioregoiug so much of their ciuim as would have applied to tho part not payablo by the teiiauts as tribute to the mortgagors. The allowance to tho tributors being assented to by the defendants rcliovcH tho case from any complication which their interest might have oecii-ioned, though I roally fail to see that they had any interest to sot up against the lights of tho defendants. Those rights wore those of a mortgagee after default, who has an immediate right to tho subject of tho mortgage. I therefore adjudge the defendant to be cntitlod to tho £92 lOd lOd, with costs, £5 ss.
