The Shipwright's Anniversary.

The fifth anniversary of the Auckland Shipwright's Protection Society was celebrated last evening by a social gathering in the Cook-street Hall. This Society, which exists for trade protection purposes, has made steady progress since its formation, and now there arc 61 members in good landing. The organisation, which meets fortnightly, is presided over by Mr J. H. Cornish, chairmau, while Mr J. Fox holds the .position of hon. secretary. The "social" last evening took the form of a supper, with a ball subsequently. There were about 150 members, their wives, and visitors present. The hall was very prettily decorated with flags, kindly supplied for the occasion from the brigantino Meg Merrilies. Mr Cornish occupied the chair at the supper, which formed the first part of the programme. The usual loyal and patriotic toasts were duly given, and the Chairman then proposed " The Kindred Societies." Mr Hielop, who responded, made special reference to the advantages to be derived from these Society gatherings. He concluded by giving the toast of the "Shipwright's Association." The Chairman replied in a brief speech, stating the advantages to be derived from connection with the Society, and setting forth its aim and objects. Several other toasts were proposed, including the "Ladies" and the "Prose." The room was then cleared, add dancing commenced shortly after nine o'clock, the music being supplied by Mrs Hertz and Messrs Lee and Davis. Mr James Ryan officiated as M.C. During the intervals between the dances, songs were given by Miss Carrie Chappell and Messrs Hern, Cormish, and others. Miss Chappell, who made her first appearance in public on this occasion, possesses a voice of much sweetness, and if due attention is paid to its cultivation, she promises to become a %cry successful vocalist. Mr A. Smith was quite as popular as ever, and he was several times compelled to submit to the encores of the audience. My R. Moir rendered two selections on the violin in a very masterly manner indeed, and several well-executed step dances followed. Dancing was contiuued till shortly before daybreak this morning, when the company separated. The gathering was most enjoyable and highly-successful, and reflected considerable credit upon the managing committee, viz., Messrs J. K. Ramsay, William Ellis, C. Clark, John Mercer, Robert Moir, James Ryan, and J. H. Cormish.
