THE PLEURO-PNEUMONIA AND GOVERNMENT INACTION.
To the Editor
SiK,—l, like many others, have taken a great interest in the discussion that is going on, concerning the disease in cattle called plcuro-pncumonia, and I read with great pleasure the articles in your valuable paper. How thankful we ought to be Mr Editor that we live in a country where the press is free and unfettered, and where neglect on the part of Government or Government o/licials can be exposed. It is as you state indeed marvellous that nothing has been done, and that there should be tbig unnecessary and useless decay. It has been c'caily proved that this much dreaded disease is now iv our midst, aud because an animal which had another disease altogether is bought into Auckland, and a number of opinions taken purposely to get them to disagree, this has nothing to do with the existence or non-existence of pleuro-pneumonia. If- more proof is required by some people, (I feel confident it is not by the public generally) let the Government or any private individual oiler a reward, say £10 or £2\), for an animal with pleuro-pneumonia, and I feel confident there will be several offered within 24 hours. All of us are not in a position to do as Messrs Ireland did for the public good, viz., to pay for two professional opinions, and also to sacriliee their valuable stock, which the Government ought most decidedly to pay for. The public are scarcely yet alive to the importance of this subject. Itrustyet tosee apublic meeting held, and a petition sent to the Governor, if there is no other way of getting anything done.—l am, &c, Bull calf. March 3rd. ISSO.
