Rumoured Retirement of Rewi Denied.
(By Tkiirokaph.)
ALEX\NDRA. this day. THERE is no truth whatever in the report that liewi expressed bis iutontiou to resume his former attitudo of isolatiou regarding the Goverumeut. His last words to your correspondent at Kaipiha, where ho stayed on his way up, were: " 1 leave here for Te Kuiti to recover my health. Possibly after that I go to Hikurangi to meet Tawhiao. Then 1 will again return." "While ttt Alexandra, in reply to To Nauau, who was iv charge of the canoe party to take him up, Howi said : " I have been told there are two parties in the Government. 1 believed there were only two parties in New Zealand— Maoris and Pakehas -but I am perfectly indifferent which Pakeha party is in power." Ilewi went at his own wish and desire to Major Mair, which ig considered conclusive that ho is not-unfavourable to tho present Ministry. He further informed me, in the presence of two of the most prominent settlers, that he hoped to meet Major Mair on his next visit. There is about as much truth in the telearam referred to as in Tawhiao'a telegram laid before the House last session. The Governor can proceed to Sydney with all confidence.
