During the Footscray election Mr Patterson, the Commissioner of Public Works, made the astounding statement that [the associated banks had tried todrag down our loan to a price whice the Government would not accept, ami those banks and the " Argus" are leagued together to make'some money out of tec transaction, although in doing so tbey would sacrilicc the best interests of the country. The Associated Banks held a meeting and resolved to ask it the report was true and if so whether the, statement of their colleague was endorsed by the Cabinet. The Cabinet, in a reply declined to acknowledge that a Cabinet Minister was responsible to anyone outside the I'atliiimciit. 1 lie Banks refuse to accept this statement as satisfactory. If this unwise utterance of the Minister has bcei. telegraphed to Loudon it may possibly affect the prospects of the loan. , <..

Yeo» man's did certainly recommend Gershire's name to the Government; but there were otder reasons why he should not receive the," appointment, Yeoman's'now says that the - .0 was a loan to him, and that he had paid .;■•. it back. The matter lias been investigated by a Committee of the League, one-half of which has brought up a report wlihe-wasfc- ' ing Ycomans, and the other half sny that the whole proceedings are surrounded by grave suspicions. THE C! ICKETLRS.

The English cricketers played their tit. _ match, and won with six wick_i,s lo spare. Mullogh, the aboriginal, played in this match, and won laurels for his batting in the second innings. A subscription of__o was made up for him on tho ground. The Englishmen were entertained at dinner on Saturday evening by all the Melbourne .ricketcrs Club. The Governor was iiresent. Lord Harris made a speech, and in somewhat questionable taste alluded to the dispute in Sydney, fo- which such ample amends had been made by tho pre_ and public. A number of the cricketers are passengers by the Albion, othois proceed Home by the Garonne direct on Saturday.

GENERAL NOTKS. It is not yet decided that there should he any Easter Volunteer Encampment. The weather still continues very tine and terribly dry. No rain to speak of- has fallen for.

A consignment of William McCullneh's cattle arrived from London in splendid condition. ~ X Miss Augusta Dargon, tragedienne achieved a great success. All the places of amusement ar .poorly attended.
