For the cause that lacks assistance. For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in tha distance, And the good that we can do.
The uiisuitableness of the Suez route as a mail Bervi.ce for Auckland requires no further proof than is given this month. At the present moment the Auckland portion of the Suez mail, which left London via Brindisi on June 1 7, is kicking about somewhere in the Southern provinces, while the San Francisco mail to January 30, thirteen days later jthan dates via Suez, has been delivered. JNor can this be described as exceptional, for the Suez mail is really several days ahead of time, the due date of the; January London mail via Suez being tho lOtli at the Bluff, with dates via Southampton to Jau. 9,
date wt tne San Francisco mail, of Lonvlcut date the 30th January, is tho 12th ut Auckland, and the stoanvors aro usually a day before time. It has come to this—that no Auckland correspondence, either tmtwarcl Or homowavd, should be sent via Stten. Take, for comparison, the latest homeward mails. That which left here via San Francisco, on tho 4th of the present mouth, Avill mveb. London on the 15th of April. Tho mail via Suez, which was made u|> in Auckland on the sth to catch tho steamer from the Bluff, docs not reach London via Btindiai until tin! fith. of May, and via Southampton till tho 12th. Taking its departure then from Auckland only one day later, it arrives in London twenty days later via Brindisi and 27 days via Southampton, In fact, a letter might bo detained over a whole month, tintil the noxt outgoing San Francisco mail from Auckland, and still reach its destination only oni day later than if sont by the Suez mail via Southampton, which had lel't Auckland 27 days before. These facts, which may bo verified upon reference to tho latest time-table, should bo borne in mind by all correspondents.
