THE DYING OUT OF THE MAORIS.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Your correspondent Mr J. Wood is much exercised in mind in consequence of the acknowledged fact that the Maories are dying out before us. He soems unable to comprehend tho cause, so if you will allow me, I will briefly givo him a hint on tho subject, which may or may not offer to his mind a satisfactory solution of the question. The Folution of it lies in tho tollowiug prophecy, uttered in connection with the nation of Israel (now identified with the British race) upwards of a hundred yeM-s after they were taken in to captivity : "Therefore, fear thou not, Omy servant, Jacob; neither be dismayed, 0 Israel: for I will save thee from afar, and the seel from tho land of their captivity ; and Jacob Bhull re'urn, and be in reßt, and bo quiet, and none shall make him afraid, For I am with thee saith the Lord, to save thee, though 1 make a ' full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will 1 not make a full end of thoe." It ib a decree of an all-wise Providence, and being so, neither Sir George Grey nor Mr Sheehan will bo able to alter the inevitable. King Canute's courtiers, it may be remembered, flattered the old gentleman by telling him that tne tide would not dare rise to the sent he was occupying if he bid it not do 39; he forbade it tolcomelnearer, but nevertheless it still rose, and the royal seat waa soon surrounded with water. It is absurd saying, as some do, that it is our vices that are destroying the Maori race. Why do not our victs destroy us as a nation? We continue to increase and multiply in a ratio far in advance of any other nation, notwithstanding our vicious habits. So that alone cannot bo the cau=ie. The only understandable solution is in the text 1 have given.—l have, &c, Anglo-Israel.
