Accident in Wellington-street.
An accident of a somewhat serious nature, but which we are glad to say, was not attended with fatal consequences, occurred in Wellington-street on Saturday last. The victim was an elderly lady, named Mis Carter, mother of Mr Carter, boot and shoemaker, Queen-street. It appears that she was conversing iv front of St. James's Church .with a female friend, when one of Wiustoue's drays approached. The work of cutting down the street, which is at present in progress, has rendered the pathway very narrow, and to make it more dangerous, there is a steep embankment on one side. When the dray was only a short distance off, the leader, which was fastened behind the vehicle, became frightened, and broke loose. It ran in the direction ot the two ladies, and reared up on its hind legs. Mrs Carter had no chance to escape, but fortunately for herself, she became frightened and flurried, avid fell. One ot the animal's hoofs grazed her knee, but the injury thus caused was very slight. Mrs Carter Avas taken up in an insensible condition, and carried to her own house in William-street, and medical assistance scut for. It was then found that her shoulder and side had been bruised by the fall, and her knee slightly injured. She has been compelled to keep to her bed since the occurrence. It was extremely fortunate that Mrs Carter fell when the horse reared over her, inasmuch as if she had remained standing she would have been almost certain to be crushed to death. The dangerous state of the road at the spot indicated demands that something should be done, in order to prevent accidents in the future
