THE ACCIDENT AT THE NORTH SHORE.

(To the Editor). Sir, —The accident to a youngster at the North Shore yesterday ought to be a lesson tn the local authorities, if there be any, or the residents. There may not be at some other time a plucky young man in attendance, and as there is neither bo;' t". rope, or life-buoy on either wharf, I fear s :ne time (knowing what boys are) you v ill i ivfj to record some distressing case of drowi.;Qfr in the presence of parents or others, wishMut any means whatever of rescue bein^ at hand. Mupt we, indeed, wait rmtil sor'°

sad loss of life teaches the necessity of making provision for such ordinary results of large traffic ? At all events it shall not he for want of the authorities being reminded that it is the duty of the District Board to make such provision at public wharves, and if they do not do so it is to be hoped they will be held responsible. If they plead they have no means for such purposes (but which I much doubt) let them apply to the ratepayers or resident* in the district to contribute, and I am certain the result will be that yesterday's accident will result in saving many lives.—Yours, &c., Resident.
