The Devenport Lodge ot Oddfellows, celebrated the anniversary by a ball in _ the Devenport Hall, on Friday evening. Notwithstanding the storms and ram there was a large gathering of the members and their lady friends, including many representees of the Order from Auckland. The hall had been very tastefully decorated by the local members and preseuted a very attractive appearance. Mr Hunter's band was in attendance and dancing commenced at_niue o'clock, under the direction of Bros. T Inglis and Orlando Wells, who performed the duties of joint Master of Cerem n:es in a good-humoured and courteous manner. At 12 o'clock the company, con 3 sistlng of about 40 couples were led to the sta<~e where the committee had provided an excellent spread of good things, _ which pleased everyone present. The affair was a, great success, and Bros. James Mays and. F Willis, who had exerted themselves in I getting up the ball, received a well-merited vote of thanks fiom all present. Gas is superior to every other material as ■_» light-giving agent; not only on account of its brilliancy and its cheapness, but because it is safer, economises time and labour, and is more easily managed. Amongst all classes of society it is in high favour; taking rank with the necessaries, as well as the elegancies of life. It merits whatever can be said on its behalf.
