FATAL ACCIDENT AT NEWTON.

THE INQUEST.

—THIS DAY.

AN inquest aa'us held this afternoon on the body of a little boy, aged 2 years and 10 months, named William John Given, before Dr. Philson, and a jury, at the Naval and Family Hotel, Karangahape Road. Mr James Davis, foreman. Sub-Inspector Pardy conducted the enquiry on the part of the police. Sub-Inspector Pardy stated that he had not had time to get up the necessary evidence, and as there \vere a great many rumours about respectins the accident, he Avas desirous of gutting at the real facts of the case.

Dr Philson said that it was necessan", also, to have a post-mortem examination. The enquiry Avas therefore adjourned until Wednesday next, at two o'clock. The particulars of the accident may briefly be stated. The little boy was out Avith his mother in the morning in the Karangahape Road, Avhen he Avas run over by a horse and cart belonging to Mr Johnson, a baker in the neighbourhood, unobserved by his mother. The horse was driA'cn by a young man, about twenty, named John Stow. The accident Avas not seen by any person, but immediately after the passing of the cart, the child was seen lying in the road by a Avoman, avlio immediately went to the boy's ossistance, and picked him up. Observing that the child Avas iniured, the mother's attention Avas called to the accident, and tho child com'eyed home. The little fellow Avas in great pain, and lhe assistance of Dr Young Avas called in, but all efforts to save life proved unavailing. The child died at 2 o'clock.
