CITY COUNCIL.—This Day.

The ordinary meeting of the City Council .a held to-day. Present—F. L. Prime, t isq. (Chairman), Councillors, Goldie, Oos"*rave, Hurst, Brett, Holdship. tr> A variety of correspondence had been disposed of.

DESIGNATION. The following letter was read :— " My numerous public engagements prevent me perfoiming my duties as a City Councillor to my own satisfaction, or, I believe, beEefically to the public interest, therefore, T resign my position as a City Councillor.— Your obedient servant, "y. m. C. Daldy." NEW, STREET R. The following report of the Street's Committee w£ts read : "Your committee recommend that the fallowing works to Tve. the .first works proceeded wi.h, out of the Endowments Loan Fund during the present Spripg, in the order stated : Napier-st, Beresford-st, Howe-st, Anglesea-st, Sale-st, Colling woodst. Beach Road across Freeman's Bay. Your committee recommend that the sum of £50 be allowed to Mr Dernpsey for extra metal, etc, in Fort-street. Your cotnmitto do not recommend any more streets to be planted with trees in the present season. About onehalf of the amount voted will have now been expended. The report was adopted. | Ol¥t ROAD. The subject of the impassable state of the City Road was referred to the $treeta Committee. THE MARKET. Mr Greenwood, the Jes-.ee of the Market wrote a letter, asking tbe council to attend to his recent application frith regard to stopping the people carrying on the sale of vegetables etc without a licence. Tne matter was referred to the Market Committee. CLOSE BROS. This firm was granted permission to keep up their temporary premises at the corner of Victoria-street East. MR STACEY. I An application of Mr Stacey'to be allowed to carry out certain alterations on the pre- ' mises lately occupied by Messrs Fisher and Co. ALBERT STREET DRAINAGE. It was resolved that the matter of draining Albert-street through the reclamation works be referred to the Streets Committee. APPLICATION. An application from Mr J. S Sharp for the post of engineer on the Waterworks, was ordered to be acknowledged. NEW LAMBS. The Secretary of the Gas Company wrote giving particulars as no when the new lamps would be ready for lighting. MOUNT EDEN HALL. A petition was read from Mr Suiter, and other residents in the Mount Eden district, asking that an allotment next the reservoir be granted as a site for a public hall. Messrs W. J. Suiter, Geo. Harper, and Mr Stevenson attended as a deputation to further tbe prayer of the petition. The City Water-works engineer's report said it wouid not be advisable to grant the petition without close consideration, Mr W. J. Suiter on behalf of the Eden Terrr.ce residents, Mr Harper on behalf of the Mount Eden residents, and Mr Stephenson, on behalf of the Newton Road people, spoke in favour of the petition. On the motion of Councillor Brett the matter was referred to the Waterworks Committee. WATER WORKS BY-LAWS. On the motion of Councillor Prime it was resolved "That the Draft Water Works By-laws now prepared, be referred to the following commffctee : Councillors Daldy, Goldie, Yon der Heyde and the mover, for approval and report." The question of taking away dust from houses in Emily Place was referred to the Nuisance Committee. DURHAM STREET. A large number of the residents of Highstreet and Durham-street wrote asking that while the water pipes are being put down a sewer be also put in, so as to avoid tne roadway being taken up twice. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee. WHITE STREET. Petitions were received from White-street, for general improvements to the thoroughfare ; from Union-street, for the removal of a bank in the street, and from William-street, and referred to the Streets Committee.
