THE NEW THEATRE.
We are pleased to see that such good progress is being made with the new theatre, being built by Messrs Barnett and Levy. The brick-work is now finished and nearly all the plastering, and what remains to.be done is pretty well confined to the interior fitting and decoration. A visit was paid by our reporter yesterday, and from his account there is every probability of the bouse being ready by the time the Wimonsen Opera Troupe arrive, namely, about the end of August. The size and shape of the interior can now be fairly taken in at a glance. Comv. pared with aay theatre we have had in Auc__- '; land the proportions are very commanding, and it may confidently be. predicted that the accommodation will be, as conspicuously superior, The sides., of the proscenium,,, are already in position, showing the ,o stace to be of great width, and as tue) . depth is no less than 45 feet, it will be seen , that there will be ample space for the repre- ] sentation of any drama in the whole range of theatrical literature. The flooring of the portion to be devoted to the.stalls has been all laid down, while that -of the pit is well in progress. We may mention that tne joists are of very great strength, and not more than eighteen inches apsrt. All tne supports are calculated to bear severa times as great a weight as they are ever likely to be called upon to sustain. The ..flooring of the pit has a gradual, rise as it recedes from the stage, thus affording the occupants of the back seats as good a view as those m front.
