FOOT RACE.
A foot-hack between two local amateurs, Messrs A. Good and F. Gibson, took place this afternoon, for £10, on the Remuera road. Both men have been in training for the last month, and the event caused some stir in sporting circles. The men and their admirers went out by the 2 p.m. train.
Some time ago we mentioned the fact of a parishioner of St Marks Church, Remuera, having given the munificent donation of £300 towards building a Spire for that suburban Church. Plans and specifications were drawn by Mr Herepath, and tenders received. These were not accepted, but subsequently fresh plans were drawn by Messrs Keals and Son. Tenders for which wore received, resulting! as@follows: Cameron, £695; Constable, £680; Layers, £560; A. R. Watson, £540 ;• Philcox and Bartley, £530; Pollard, £397. The last will not be taken up, so the lowest tender ia that of Messrs Philcox and Bartley, and only £230 above the amount promised by one gentleman. The present design is for a spire of suitable height and substantial, to accommodate the 11 cwt. Church-bell of St Marks, and let its tones be heard to advantage over the whole of the parish.
