FOOT RACE.

A foot-race between two local amateurs, Messrs A. Good and F. Gibson, took place this afternoon, for £10, on the Remuera road. Both men havo been in training for the last month, and the event caused some stir in sporting circles. The men and their admirers went out by the 2 p.m. train.

■ Some time ago we mentioned the fact of a parishioner of St Marks Church, Romuera, having given the munificent donation of £300 towards building a Spire for that suburban Church. Plans and specifications were drawn by Mr Herepath, and tenders received. These were not accepted, but subsequently fresh plans were drawn by Messrs Keala and Son. Tenders for which were received, resulting! as0follows: Cameron, £695; Constable, £GSO; Layers, £560; A. K. Watson, £540 y Philcox and Bartley, £530; Pollard, £397. The last will not be taken up, so the lowest tender is that of Messrs Philcox and Bartley, and only £230 above the amount promised by one gentleman. The present design is for a spiro of suitable height and substantial, to accommodate the 11 cwt. Church-bell of Sb Marks, and let its tones bo heard to advantage over the whole of the parish.
