MR. CARLETON AT NEWMARKET.
The electors of Mount Eden last evening met in the Presbyterian school-room of the district, for the purpose of listening to the political opinions of Mr Carleton, the candidate for their suffrages. Mr C. C. McMillan was voted to the chair, and after a few remarks on the present crisis, callecl upon Mr Carletqn to address the meeting. Mr Carleton, in his address, referred to the particular questions of the day, and after referring to loans in connection with public works, said they had to look forward to a heavy burthen of taxation, and even direct taxation, because the custom duties were now so high that they could not be increased without injury to the revenne. Should he be returned he would address himself 'energetically that the whole debt should be a first charge upon the whole land fund of the colony. He then referred to the compact of 1856, of which he knew the history, and which was really no compact at all. After reverting to a number of matters, Mr Carleton told the meeting that he had struggled for the welfare of the North, and would continue to do so. The honor and interest of the North would be perfectly safe in his hands. A number of questions of more or less importance having been put to the candidate which were answered. Mr Wrigley moved, and Mr Jenkins seconded, a vote of thanks to Mr Carleton for his address, which was crrried. The meeting then separated.
