Eliza Best, who appeared in the dock with a child about two years old was charged with being very drunk Jast night, and also with being a rogne and a vagabond. The prisoner, who spoke in a voice rendered husky by drink and exposure, admitted being drunk, but denied that she had rogued anybody. The Clerk of the Courb testified to the fact of the prisoner's name being in the Court records for convictions for drunkenness numbers of times.
While the woman was strongly urging her innocence the Jittle child kept up a lively prattle, which was in striking contrast with the wretched tones of the mother.
The Bench sentenced the prisoner to three months1 hard labour.
Peter Salmon was fined 10s and coats for a simple cbbo of " drunk." LA If CE NY, Thomas Courtney, described by SubInspector Pardy as a new arrival, pleaded guilty to stealing from a boarding-house in West Queen-street, a gold ring, value 11s 6d, the property of Isaac Barrask. Prisoner said he was driven to the commission of the act. He pawned the ring to pay for his board and lodging. He meant to have redeemed it, and returned io to its owner. Sentence : One month hard labour The assistant of the pawnbroker where the ring was pledged, made an application for compensation. One shilling was allowed. A WIFK BEATER. Thomas Mulvaney was brought up charged ■with threatening the life of his wife, Ann Mulvaney. The wife when called did not appear. Sub-Inspector Pardy said the defendant had only been arrested that morning. If their Worships would remand the case till to-morrow he would undertake that the woman should be in attendance. The accused said he would clear out at once if their Worships would let him off. He had been bound over four times through the same woman, and would not get in the same mess again. He pleaded guilty to using the words, but did not mean them. Mr Sab-Inspector Pardy said the accused had been let go the last time on exactly the same (conditions and here he was again. The Bench decided to remand the case for the attendance of the complainant. Thin was all the business.
