THE MAYORAL ELECTION.

(To the Editor of the Evening Stak). Sir, —Your editorial anent the mayoralty business, was not penned a moment too soon. It is high time that salutary ridicule should be employed to expose the absurdity cf this outcry against "outsiders." If there is any meaning in it at all, it amounts to this: that because an individual has managed somehow or other to fill the office of Mayor during one year, therefore he should continue to do so. Some people think that the mere occupancy of any elective seat does not give the possessor any sacred or. prescriptive right thereto. There are those who believe that plodding industry and a mild demeanour are not the only qualifications to be desired in one aspiring to the civic chair. The gentleman who at present adorns that piece of furniture, though possessing many estimable traits, must frequently have felt painfully conscious that he was out of his sphere. His mild manner and gentle tones are altogether too feeble for quelling the uproar in that model menagerie. He has "done his duty without fear or favour;" he has had the honor of laying the foundation stone of our waterworks, and he has been constant in his attendance at Council meetings for the good of an uDgrateful public. Now, why not retire and let some one else have the honour (and the worry) for a year or so. No one would feel indignant with him for so doing, and I am sure Mr Prime must require relaxation after the prolonged strain upon ha mental powers.—An Ouisidek.
