The prosecutor said the piece of zinc produced in court was his property. It was in the form of a case, and was iv the back yard of his premises at Mount Albert, where it was used for steeping wheat. Its value was 15s. He missed it on the 22nd. A son of the prosecutor corroborated his father's evidence. Eobert Hodge, in the employ of Mr Smart, said the prisoner brought the zinc to him on Tuesday last and old ifc. There was 631bs weight of it, and the price given was f d per lb. Coustable Clarke said ho arrested the prisoner in Parnell on Saturday. The zinc was found at Mr Smart's. Mr Laishley in his address, contended that the charge was a trivial one, inasmuch as the value was under 20s, and the prisoner thought the zinc was nseless. She was kept back by the officers. A PAINFUL CASE, Frances Dwyer, a well-dressed and not illlooking young person of about 23 years of age, apparently a domestic servant, who exhibited a most pitiable sense of her wretched position, was charged with stealing a large quantity of wearing apparel valued at £19, from the house of MrF. J. Bennett on the 20th July, 1874. ? Mr Broham asked for a remand. The prisoner here burst out sobbing, and called out that she did not want a remand. She pleaded guilty. Mr Rees said he appeared for the prisoner, and if the Court would allow him he should record a plea of not guilty and ask that bail might be allowed. They would see that the case was not one which they could dispose of in that Court. ' The Bench allowed the remand till tomorrow, and fixed the bail at prisoner's own recognizances of £50, and two sureties of £25 each. YOUTHFUL JONESES IST PERIL. George Jones, jun., aged 4 years, and Mary Ann Jones, aged 8 years, were brought up as neglected children within the meaning of the iMeglecfced and Criminal Children's Act. These were children of the, wretched woman who had been sentenced to imprisonment for using filthy language, Mr. Broham

having represented that they would grow up in crime if they were not taken care of. The Bench made an order for-the boy to be sent to the Industrial Home, and the girl to St. Mary's < 'rphanage. This was all the business.
