WELLINGTON.
" This day. Dearth of Gossip. There is really nothing doing here. The one desire is to get to a speedy end of the session, buc still the discussion on the Abolitionßill in committee is protracted by th e efforts of members to get it into something like shape, The proposal yesterday of Sir George Grey to amend clause 15, so as to abolish the gold duty is the most important alteration suggested. The hon. member protested against tbe tax as unjust and oppressive, and contended that a tax on wool would be more equitable. The Government urged the mover to withl draw the motion upon the promise that the Government would give an opportunity for the discussion of the question upon i|s merits. Mr Stafford said he was disposed to support the motion.
The dinner to Sir Georae Grey by the Opposition was private. It is said to have been characterised by great cordiality, andtohaTft been devoted to the discussion of important questions in connection with the future policy of the party. The discussion of clause 15 was the only subject of importance to Auckland at yesterday afternoon's sitting. An amendment by Mr O'Connor, placing goldfields revenue in the same position as rates, to be supplemented wi'h the subsidy of £2 for £1 collected. The motion for £180,000 imprest supply for immigration and public works, passed through committee, and was reported to the House.
