Wfi warn the people of Auckland of what the coming struggle is to be, so that their minds may be early directed to the real iesue. The present form of the struggle is only temporary, and is but for preserving an open arena for the real conflict, which will be for Separation. For this reason we have very great pleasure in directing the attention of every one to an able and valuable letter from Mr. Hugh Mart Luak, which appears in another column and which presents the debit side of Separation. The credit side will appear we believe in a subsequent issue. We say the attention of every one ; for in the conflict that ia corning we believe society will be moved to its foundations, and as Mr Reader Wood said last night in the House, from the Superintendent down to the sweep-chimney, every one will feel an interest. We therefore ask attention to the careful statement submitted in another column. Figures we know, are usually dry to many. But when it is so often asserted that the North Island cannot stand alone, everyone should have the answer in his mouth and be able to tell what the extent of the burthen will be at the utmost. This calculation— and it is a most careful and exhaustive one — shows that £572,000 per annum would be the total expenditure required to be provided against in the North Island, the total burthen under which it would necessarily have to " stagger. " Let us digest that one fact. And in next issue we shall probably see the staff with which, in the form of revenue, we shall be able to sustain our '• staggering" steps; And it will be found, we think, that though not affording enough for the usual pillage to the public plunderers, who are fighting a death struggle for the maintenance of the irresponsible central administration, it will present a most assuring and comforting prospect for the admirers of honest, independent, popular, local self-government.
