MAKETU.
(From our own Correspondent) This day. Government Favours.
A cutter chartered by Government for their pet Te Pokiha or Ngatipikaeo, arrived to-day with kumeras. She has two more trips to make at least, at two guineas per day.
The natives generally thank Sir George Grey strongly. Several petitions have been to Wellington re the working of R. M. Act in Arawa distiict. Natives and Sir George Grey. The late petition re Maori votes is looked upon as an attack by the Government on Sir George Grey. The natives will nail their colours to the mast.
The Wanaiiga is well lecsived here. The Native Minister is unpopular. The whole of the officers under him are only tolerated on account of their almost unlimited power for good or bad. History repeats itself in native (or inquisition) office.
