REV. P. P. AGNEW'S LECTURES.

We invite special attention to the advertiseannouiicing a series of six lectures on subjects of deep interest to enlightened colonists desirous of information respecting the early convict life in New South Wales. The lecturer, the Rev. P. P. Agnew, is in every respect qualified for honestly dealing with his projected, intellectual work ; not only is he a fluent speaker and eloquent in style, but for many years he held the responsible position of Government chaplain to the prisons and convict establishments of New South Wales, and during a lengthened period the rev. lecturer had rare personal opportunities of gathering facts, and observing modes of convict discipline and their effects for good or evil. While in the civil service Mr Agnew, had the irreparable misfortune to lose his right arm which in a great measure has incapacitated him from the more active pursuits, thus, rather than lead a life of useless ease, he turns to the resources of his own mind, and in order to enlighten governments and men on subjects with which he is more thoroughly conversant than men who have not had his opportunities of observation, he has adopted the popular means of oral communication from the platform. Previous to'coming to Auckland, Mr. AgneW was requested by thirty of the chief legislators of the Sydney Parliament, and a large number of the leading merchants of that city, to go to England as a salaried Lecturer on Emigration, bub Mr Agnew preferred to •'paddle his own canoe" and be free from party influence, so that he might utter his own experiences confidentially and truthfully, and on Monday evening next he will address the citizens of Auckland on the subject of his firsfe lecture, which appears in the present number of the Star.
