Saturday. The Prospector's shaft has been sunk 19 feet. The ground has become harder in the last foot or two, and had split the lode into two, but its effect on the quality cannot yet be ascertained. A very good prospect can be washed from the casing, bat so much gold cannot be seen in. the stone as before. A black vein like coal, the value of which is not known, has also come in. In the Pride of the East claim, north of the Prospectors, the lode is from 6ft to Bft wide, composed of layers of quartz and black stuff, like that which has come into the Prospectors' ground, only softer. Prospects of gold are obtainable from any part of the lode. 51b or 61b, tried at the Thames, yielded 9 grs. Two cwt. have been Bent down for trial. In the Band of Hope a conglomerate body of quartz sft. wide has been discovered. No old is visible in the stone, but 1 £ grains can be washed from the casing. In the Eldorado (Hunter and Frater's) the show is admitted to be next best to the Propectors. Reed, Bird, and Quinn are likely to amalgamate to avoid.litigation. In Kennan's lease a stranger in this part of the country found a leader about four inches wide, in which gold was distinctly visible, not only in the quartz, but also in the casing. On info/ming him that it was leased grouud he did not take it kindly, and swore that if he covld not get an interest he would do his utmost to keep others from it, and with this he returned to cover up the ground. Jackson and Graham have, it is said, pegged off a lease of 15 acres to the south of the Golden Gate, which latter is situated south on the Prospector's line. It is rumoured that a small vein has been discovered in which gold was gofr. Since the above was completed I hear that a portion of the ground in question was pegged off some days ago by A. Newdick, Joe Woods, and Goldsworthy, so that if the ground is really valuable, there is another lawyer's fee or two sticking out.
