CITY COUNCIL.— This Day.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held this afternoon attwo o'clock. Present : His Worship the Mayor (in the chair) ; Councillors Buchanan, Daldy, Brett, and Hurst. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and admitted. COUNCILLOR ISAACS. Edward Isaacs, Esq., was introduced, and took his seat at the Council, having passed the necessary formula. LETTERS. A letter was read from Mr. Vincent E. Rice respecting a new road in Elliott-street. A letter was also read from the Chairman of the Newton Highway Board as to certain necessary repairs in the road, in which the Board request the Council to pay one-half the expense. Letters were received from James Harris, Samuel Coombes, and Holland and Butler for the use of urinals as a medium of advertising. Councillor Daldy proposed and Councillor Brett seconded, "Tbat tenders be invited on the subject." Carried. A letter was read from James Batcher, requesting the Council to remove a certain quantity of earth from the neighbourhood of his premises in Union-street. It was agreed that the Council could not entertain the matter at present, as it would cost at least £100, according to the Surveyor's report. NEW STREETS. A letter was read from Mr. Stephenson respecting the taking over of certain new streets. Captain Daldy moved, and Councillor Buchanan seconded, "That the Council take over all new streets that are finished in accordance with the terms of the letter. EEPOETB. The reports of the Streets Committee and City Surveyor were read and adopted. In the Finance Committee's reports it was shewn that Mr George Staines had put the city to £15 expense in contesting the recent election. , FIRE BRIGADE. A long letter was read from Superintendent Hughes in vindication of his conduct at the late fire in Albert-street; and stating that in consequence of the bursting of his hose, his plans were just rated ; and that he had only twelve members piesent. Councillor Hurst wished to know the meaning of this long epistle. Councillor Daldy thought such a report very necessary, and he moved that it be referred to the Fire Brigade Committee.

Seconded by Councillor Brett and carried. Councillor Daldy moved that the Financial report be adopted, and that the estimated income and expenditure for the year be printed and published for the information of the public

EARTH.-CLOdiTfl,

The Chairman stated the Inspector of Nuisances had repoited that the system of earth-closets would come into operation on the Ist of June next, that 1100 boxes were ready, and that the public would be supplied with earth.
