GREAT DROUGHT IN QUEENSLAND.
A Brisbane correspondent writes to the Sydney Morning Herald, on November 18, says : —A thunderstorm last evening, bringing with it a few hours' heavy rain, gladdened the hearts of some thousands of people of all classes and occupations about Brisbane. The continued drought was being felt so universally that raiu had begun to be a matter of serious importance. Cattle were dying by hundreds, crops were failing, households were suffering in health, and more than one industry was languishing from this common cause. From appearances it is thought that the drought ia broken up, but the country could take a week's good steady rain on end without a solitary voice being raised in complaint, and last night's storm is but the veriest stopgap. The rainfall at Brisbane for the six months ended in October was 8 '80 as against 29 09 of 1873 — much the same proportions being maintained in all the districts from the coast-line to ths top of the main ridge. Since the end of July until last night we had not had rain enough to take the starch out of a muslin dress. .:,-.': ;Vf- " .; ••'•«''
