The new Governor of Western Australia is brother to Sir Hercules Robinson, Governor of New South Wales.
Mr Abbott, Jiiuiater of Mines, narrowly escaped losing his sight through! mistaking sulphuric acid for eye lotion. The Government have appointed Sir Daniel Cooper, Bart., to act ■with the representatives of i^c.w Zealand and Queensland in the United Kingdom for the purpose of entering into a contract for the telegraphic cables required to connect New Zealand with this colony and other parts of Australia by a second line with Europe. The appointment is made pursuant to arrangements entered into by the representatives of the three colonies interested at the conference they lately held in Sydney. We understand that Mr Daintree, Agent-General for Queensland, will represent his own colony, and that the Hon Julius Vogd, now on his way to England, will act on behalf of New Zealand.
Madame Bishop commenced a series of musical entertainments yesternight, and met with a splendid reception. Mr Hoskins and wife have opened at the Victoria to a crowded house, and play here a month. On the first night of Mr Hoskin's appearance at the Victoria he impersonated Sir Charles Surface in " The School for Scandal," Miss Colville as Lady Teazle, Mr B. N. Jones as Sir Peter, Mr J. G. Joyce as Sir Oliver (Surface, and Miss Douglas as Mrs Candour.
Madame ltistori and an Italian dramatic company, numbering thirty-three per Eons, bringing scenery for the different plays produced, is expected in Sydney from San Francisco in July. They proceed thence to Melbourne. May Howard, a talented American actress, plays a star engagement through New Zealand, and left to-day. She has made a great reputation here. Owing to the great scarcity of servant girls in New South Wales, a preliminary meeting in Sydney has been called for the pmpose offormina; au association to promote the immigration of female servants.
A Chinaman has been garotted and robbed of £5 at Bathurst.
A labourer on the Great Western line, while uncoupling a trolly, earth-laden, had his foot crushed flat by the truck passing
over it,
