VOYAGE OF THE NEW BARQUENTINE FALCON.
DUNEDIN.
(From our own Correspondent.)
mi. i_ • Tilis day. _ Ihe barquentine Falcon arrived yesterday in splendid condition. She made a good passage, the light weather considered, and behaved well throughout. Having no ballast under her timber cargo, the captain could not press her. Hence the best rate of sailing is unascertainable. He could, however, get ten knots out of her. The vessel is much admired, and pronounced a credit to Auckland.
The Harbour Board propose at once to dredge the long channel so as to enable interprovincial steamers to come up to town, and to build a dredger capable of lifting 500 tons of stuff hourly. The Board is very dissatisfied, because the Superintendent delays delegating the powers under the Marine Act. They interviewed Mr. Reynolds yesterday, who said as soon as it was clone, the Government will act the same as in the case of Auckland.
The Licensing Bench has steadily set its face against the re-hearing of applications already refused, and has notified that anyone convicted of a breach of tbe Act need never apply.
Trout fishing was commenced yesterday. Large numbers of people went fishing to the Water of Leith, and catches of 13 and 8 lbs. are reported.
