THE MYSTERY OF ADMIRAL WISEMAN'S LIFE AND DEATH.
The death of Rear-Admiral Sir William S. Wiseman, of the Royal Navy, at St. Joseph has unravelled a mystery worthy of the most ingenious romance-writer. The man registered at the Saunders House, St, Joe,: as William Chambers. He died suddenly, I.and; the Coroner kept the papers in his possession.; A week after his death, the Coroner received a letter from one Downing, of Fairfax, Nebraska, staiting that Chambers was none other than Admiral Wiseman, and demanding his papers. The Coroner declined to deliver them. A week or two later, letters from the son of the deceased were received, instructing the Coroner on no account to part with them. Then the particulars of the story were made known. It seems that many years ago a noted London courtesan perpetrated a bold robbery in a novel manner. Possessing the Ml credit of a London tradesman, she ordered an im-. mense assortment of rich goods, jewellery, velvets, and satins from which to choose. The merchants fell into the trap and supplied her with the richest in their; possession. Instead of making selections and returning the remainder, she eloped with them and then disappeared. Tie Admiral accompanied her. They reached the States without detection, and her companion purchased a great deal of land in Gage county (Neb.) They were accompanied in tfieirflight by Downing, the Admiral's valet When, after four or five years, the Admiral tired of his companion, he married her to Downing, and returned incog, to England. Mrs. Downing meanwhile died in a secret sort of way, and Downing absorbed her property. It was while on 'his way back to Nebraska that Admiral Wiaeman died. Letters were found in his possession corroborating the above facts, flow pursuit was evaded, and the secret preserved so long, is a mystery soluble only on the hypothesis of British reserve.— Chicago Tribune.
