CHARGES OF CRUELTY BY AN IMMIGRANT AT NAPIER.

An enquiry into tbe alleged cruelty by the captain of the Bebington to an immigrant girl has concluded. Tbe result is not made public. The captain is also said to contemplate legal proceedings on his side. The evidence is said to be contradictory. The girl states that she refused to give up a pocket-book contaiaing memoranda of modems on the voyage, and concealed it about her person, and was seized, and tied up and stripped, when the book was taken from her. All the immigrams ex Bebington are engaged. Four of the sailors of the same ship ' were sent to gaol for a month for refusing to work. They pleaded guilty, and complained of bad treatment and insufficient food) but tbis was not proved.
