CRICKET.

Several matches were played on Saturday afteruoon, but owing to the want of punctuality on the part of the players the games were begun too late for us to be able to publish any particulars. The Auckland Club had a practice match at Ellerslie Gardens, the sides being captained by the treasurer and secretary. The new ground affords a capital wicket. even now, and when the water is laid on, it will be a splendid field. The secretary himself (Mr. Cotton) mainly contributed to the success of his side, as he put together 31 in good style. Colson also played well. On the other side, Macfarlane (Barber's substitute), made nine, but there was no other scoring of note. Several ladies and gentlemen were on the ground, and the fine weather enabled them to enjoy the sight of the contest as well as the beautiful promenade afforded by the gardens. Mr James, who is in charge of the refreshment department in the Rotunda, made a very tempting show with his strawberries and cream, which met with due appreciation. WEST END V. WAVERLY. This match was played in the Domain on Saturday and resulted in a victory for the Waverly in the first innings, the game not being played out. For the victors, Brown scored 14 by some good cricket; while for the West End, Mumford was top-scorer with 11. Lawless and Connell for the latter, and Garland for the former, did " good business " iv the bowling line.

NORTH SHORE V. PONSONBY. This game was played at the North Shore and -was the most important contest of the day. The North Shore did not come out in their full strength, perhaps from underrating their opponents, but their temerity, if such was thejj ease, met with retribution, for they had to succumb. Fletcher and Braithwaite, for the North Shore, and Masefield, Harrison, Regan, and Winter, for the Ponsonbyites, all scored into double figures. The following are the full scores:—
