AUCKLAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

The third annual meeting of this Association was held last night (Thursday), at the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association, at 8 o'clock. The attendance was very limited and considering the successful way ia which the affairs of the Assbciatiori have been conducted by a few members, it was discreditable on the part of those absentee members who derive the advantage without sharing che burden. Captain Morrow was voted to he chair, and after reading and confirming the minutes, the following report was read by the Hon. Secretary :— . f'THIRD ANNUAL REPORT OF THE AUCKIAND RIFLB ASSOCIATION. ; . ... *' The Committee, in making their Report

i for the past year—the third of the Associa ; tion's existence, have to express their plea- , sure that it has been such a successful one. i This Association, having for its object the encouragement of rifle shooting among nonVolunteers, as well as the assistance of the Volunteer marksmen, must depend esaentially on the support of the outside public ! This hasrbeen forthcoming, and the burden ', of maintaining the Institution has net fallen j upon the Volunteers. During the past year, , as appears by the balance-sheet, the public : contributed the sum of about £90 for its support, the rest of the funds, proceeds of a concert and theatrical performance, and subscriptions and contributions from Volunteers and members of the Association, I amounting in. the whole, with a small balance from last year, to the sum of £147 8a 3d. ! "In September, 1873, in accordance with resolutions passed, efforts were made to raise funds sufficient to send four representatives to compete in the Intercolonial Rifle Match at Melbourne. The necessary amount having been obtained. Nineteen | competitors fired for the selection of representatives, and the four highest scorers were sent to Melbourne (Messrs. Skinner, Stone, G. Partington, and Alderton), where they upheld the honor of the Auckland marksmen in a mo3t creditable manner. | "In accordance with instructions, the Secretary communicated with the National Rifle Association, and in the course of the year received their silver medal for competition by this Association. This was secured at an expenditure of £5, and the Committee suggest that the same be competed for at a meeting to be held in March or April next. "The Committee venture to express a hope that there is yet considerable vitality in the institution, to accomplish, under judicious management the objects for which it was formed. They would, however, urge upon the members the desirability, and indeed, necessity, of an effort to continue the sympathy and eupporfc of the public, without which it is impossible to achieve success. " Owing to the absence from Auckland of the Hon. Treasurer, the Committee were unable to call the general annnal meeting in compliance with the rules, and taking advantage of that fact, the Committee determined to advertise the third aanual prize meeting for the month of November, which was successfully carried out. The prizes won ah that meeting did not, on this occasion, embrace monpy prizes, but consisted Of a cup, timepieces, and other articles, a determination which your Committee believe has led to universal satisfaction. " In conclusion, the Committee have much pleasure in intimating that there are no liabilities due by tho Association, but commence another year with a credit balance of £5 5s 2d. " A. Devorb, " Hon. Sec." The balance-sheet was then read and adopted, confirming the particulars given in ' the report. The election of officers was then ' proceeded with, resulting a3 follows: — I President, J. C. Firth, Esq.; vice-presidents, Messrs C. B. Stone and H. Brett ; honorary treasurer, Mr J. C. Davies ; honorary secretaries, Messrs Devore and E. Cooper. Committee, Messrs A. Morrow, R.
