PEOTEST AGAINST SIR GEORGE ARNEY'S DEPARTURE FOR AUCKLAND.
INCREASED CITY KATES IN WEL-
LINGTON.
WELLINGTON.
(From our own Correspondent).
This day.
The Post last night says :—" We cannot allow it to pass without a protest against the action by the Chief Justice, in leaving his proper place as President of the Court of Appeal, for the purpose of going to Auckland to administer the necessary oath to the new Governor. The proceeding appears wholly unnecessary and extremely objectionable. There is not the slightest necessity for swearing in the Marquis of Normanby at Auckland. There is nothing whatever to prevent the Luna being sent to await the arrival of the Hero at that port, and bring his Excellency either direct, reaching Wellington before Sir James Ferguason had left Auckland. Obviously, the scab of Government is the proper place for the ceremony. Why it should be deemed advisable for Bir George Arney to meet Lord Normanby at Auckland any more than it was for him to receive his predecessor at Hokitika, we altogether fail to perceive." In conclusion, it says, "there is no valid reason why Lord Normanby should not be dworn in at Wellington, and we utterly disapprove of the important interests at stake in our highest Court of law being subordinated to any other considerations." Considerable dissatisfaction is expressed at this years rating. The assessor went on the principle that as rents had gone up very much since last year, rates should be raised proportionately.
