PRESENTATION TO CAPTAIN BURNS.
The members of tbe Hobson Company held a special meeting last evening to consider a presentation of esteem to their late captain, Mr A. Burns It was finally resolved that a suitable address, expressive of their feelings towards him should be presented on the s.s. Southern Cross, which takes him to Tauranga. A committee was appointed to carry out the resolution. THE PRESENTATION. To-day at half-past one o'clock, the presentation took place on tha wharf close to the s.s. Southern Cross previous to her departure for Tauranga. Lieut. Peter Dignan officiated on behalf of himself and brother officers. Sub-Lieut. Clifton and a large number of the members of the company were prssent. Tbe testimonial consisted of an illuminated address, and a purse of sovereigns. Lieut. Dignan read the address, which was as follows :—■ " To Andrew Burns, Esq. "We, the officers of the Hobson Corps A.R.V., on behalf of ourselves, the noncommissioned officers and men of the said corps, in token of the esteem in which you were held during the time we served under your command, hereby present you with the acompanying purse of sovereigns to purchase a souvenir to! keep you in remembrance of the many happy hours spent together. Wishing you every happiness and prosperity in your°new sphere of life, we now say to you good-bye.—Peter Dignan, Lieut. ; W. P. Clifton, Sub-Lieut."
Captain Burns said he was deeply moved at the mark of esteem which the members of his company had honoured him with. He then suitably returned thanks. The address was handsomely got up. It was the work of Mr Dickson. JVlr Burns is about to settle at Taiawera, as managing clerk to Messrs Hart and Mclnlay, the proprietors of the Napier and Tauranga line of coaches.
