At a meetiDg of the City Council yesterday very important matters were discussed. It was resolved not to grant applications from certain gentlemen to lay down lines of street tramways. New Zealand is not old enough for that yet. ... . It was resolved to erect a town hall and market-place at an expense of £20,000. £10,000 were voted to commence an extensive system of drainage. It was determined to abolish the Mayor' 3 Court,: the chief arguments used being that it was not right for a gentleman who was instrumental in making by-laws to be allowed to sit in judgment on offenders. The opinion was also expressed that a wood Mayor might make a bad dispenser of justice. The motion was carried unanimously

Last night the annual supper of the Fire Brigade was held. Previous to the supper the Brigade and their engine, hoses, &c, marched through the town by torchlight, headed by a band. Large crowds witnessed the sight, which, was very picturesque. A seaman ftelonging to the ship Peter Denny was drowned yesterday morning while going off to a vessel in harbour. At a meeting of the Presbytery yesterday, a long discussion ensued on baptism. The Alhambra leaves to-day with the outward English mails. The Superintendent and most of the Otago members returned, per Alhambra yesterday. Prison labour is being extensively used on public works. Mr G. S. Neish has been appointed Head Master of the Industrial School.

The National Insurance Company opened here yesterday for the transaction of business.

The National Building Society meet for formation to-night. It is already much talked of and popular. The new engine hose was tested yesterday with a dead weight of 203, and was a success .

A large new goods shed, of briek —the finest in the colony—was opened on tlie railway line yesterday. A monster Derby sweep in connection with the Melbourne Cup comes off on Saturday.
